DIRECT ANSWER

Which IEC standards apply to overhead line equipment in an EPC tender?

There is no single IEC standard for a complete overhead line package. Each product family has its own design and test basis, while the project specification defines system voltage, insulation coordination, environment, utility preferences and document requirements. Build a compliance matrix item by item and record every approved deviation.

01

Use a product-by-product compliance matrix

List every BOQ item, the requested standard, the supplier offer, required tests, submitted documents and any deviation. This prevents a general statement such as 'IEC compliant' from replacing item-level evidence.

02

Separate design standards from project requirements

A product standard describes requirements and test methods for a product family. The project specification adds the actual voltage class, mechanical rating, pollution level, environmental conditions, marking and documentation obligations.

  • Record the exact standard edition when the tender specifies one.
  • Identify utility drawings or local standards that override generic catalogue data.
  • Confirm whether type, routine, sample or acceptance tests are required.
03

Close deviations before manufacture

Any difference in standard, material, rating, dimension, test method or document scope should appear in a deviation schedule. Silence should not be treated as approval.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Short answers for project buyers.

Does IEC compliance mean every product is interchangeable?

No. Products can comply with the same standard while using different dimensions, couplings, ratings or interfaces. Assembly compatibility still needs confirmation.

Can a previous type-test report be used?

It may be acceptable when the tested design covers the offered product and the project accepts the report. The tender or utility decides whether additional testing is required.

Should the standard edition be stated in the RFQ?

Yes when the project specifies it. If no edition is stated, the supplier should identify the proposed edition and request confirmation.
